PEER PROVIDERS IN THE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH WORKFORCE

NFD Co-Directors Sharon LeGore and Shannon CrossBear attended three SAMHSA nationwide summits on Peer Providers in the Behavioral Health Workforce.  The summits were held in Atlanta Georgia, Portland Oregon  and Baltimore Maryland with expected outcome to achieve the following:

  • Inclusion of diverse stakeholder perspectives in the development of a strategy to advance Peer Core Competencies in Behavioral Health
  • Increased awareness of emerging practices for Peer Workforce development including funding strategies, credentialing options, and support for promoting the employment of advancement of peers.
  • A report that outlines the opportunities , challenges and priorities for expanding and developing the peer provider behavioral health workforce

MOMSTELL and the NFD joined the other  organizations from around the country to attend the Unite to Face Addiction Rally. This historic event took place on the National Mall in Washington D.C. Unite to Face Addictions mission is to bring together the best resources in the field in order to reduce the human and social costs of addiction, every year, until this public health crisis is eliminated. Addiction impacts one in every three households in America. These are not bad people...these are good people to whom bad things happened. Someone dies from alcohol or other drugs every 4 minutes in America. That is like a jumbo jet crashing every day, with no survivors We must end the shame, stigma and community denial that surround addiction and recognize it for the devastating health issue that it is. Addiction is a health problem - not a crime  What is a crime is that 90% of people in need of treatment for addiction don't receive it –this discrimination must end. MOMSTELL joined over 600 diverse organizations from around the country launched  a first-of-its-kind campaign to confront America’s denial about the most urgent health crisis facing our nation today – addiction to alcohol and other drugs. It was incredable to see thousand and thousands of people celebrating recovery. 

Joe Walsh, Steven Tyler with his Nashville-based band Loving Mary, Sheryl Crow, Jason Isbell, The Fray, and John Rzeznick of the Goo Goo Dolls joined the celebration in Washington, D.C. These performers shared our passion for understanding the impact of addiction and the power of recovery, and boy did they put on a show. 

Also joining UNITE to Face Addiction was health expert and television host Dr. Mehmet Oz.  He released a PSA in support of the event. Additional performers, celebrity guests, and special speakers including the Director of ONDCP Michael Botticelli.   Follow Unite to Face Addiction on Facebook and Twitter for the latest announcements. It’s time to end the silence around this crisis and empower the afflicted and affected to take a stand for those who can’t.  Share this exciting news on your own social media platforms!

MOMSTELL President invited to speak at Congressional Addictions Forum

MOMSTELL's President, Sharon LeGore was invited and spoke at at the Congressional Addiction Forum on the 29th of April at our Capitol in Washington DC.  At this forum, Sharon discussed how families are affected by a child's substance use disorders and what help parents need in order to help their child and themselves. The Honorary Congressional Hosts: Senator Rob Portman (R-OH), Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Congressman Tim Ryan (D-OH), and Congressman Dave Joyce (R-OH) spoke first.  It was a great forum and gave the family voice an  opportunity to be heard.

MOMSTELL President meets Pennsylvania's new Governor, Tom Wolf

Pennsylvania's new Governor, Tom Wolf was sworn in to office on January 20, and MOMSTELL President Sharon LeGore attended the inauguration. It was a day of celebration, which was highlighted by a meet and greet at the Governor’s mansion.  Sharon spoke with Governor Wolf, and had the opportunity to share a bit  about the work of MOMSTELL.  Governor Wolf stated "Gary Tennis will remain as Secretary of the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs." We at MOMSTELL are thrilled that Secretary Tennis will continue his work and we look forward to continuing our efforts to support Secretary Tennis and the work to support families across Pennsylvania impacted by substance use disorders. Our focus will remain on improving the substance use disorder treatment and recovery field. We look forward to an opportunity to share further about the work of MOMSTELL, and how we can help the new Governor in his quest for true change in Pennsylvania.

Next NFD Call:

Fall is here and its time to  resume our NFD educational calls. It seems fitting that we have our call the week of Thanksgiving as we have much to be grateful for in this past year. We have an ever growing cadre of parent coaches and more opportunities to reach across child serving systems.  After attending the incredible Unite to Face Addiction Rally,(and seeing many of you there) we want to talk about the upcoming role for the families of the NFD in the Face Addiction campaign by continuing to unite our voices.  We are anxious to update you all on the successes we have experiened and dicuss what the future will hold for the NFD in 2016.  Shannon and I have continued to build relationships across systems and have reached out in collaborative efforts to several partners and will be filling you in on that news too.

The White House  has responded to the heroin addiction problem across the country. We also need to discuss this health crisis and have conversations about what you are seeing and hearing in your areas. What challenges you are facing and what programs are helping.  Hearing about your needs are important and will help us better determine the direction of our future educational calls.

MOMSTELL joined over 600 diverse organizations from around the country launched  a first-of-its-kind campaign to confront America’s denial about the most urgent health crisis facing our nation today – addiction to alcohol and other drugs. It was incredable to see thousand and thousands of people celebrating recovery.
